From School Library Journal

Grade 4-6-Arranged chronologically, these eight simply told stories about contacts with UFOs span a 20-year period from 1953 to 1973. Seven are well-known and often-recounted occurrences from various parts of the United States and one happened in Finland. The one-to-two page narratives describing the experiences of observers and abductees are followed by sections that list basic elements of each account such as the location of the sighting, witnesses, and physical descriptions. Like these reports, most of the titles in the accompanying bibliography and suggested further reading accept or promote the reality of alien encounters. Dramatic paintings and drawings and sketches of crafts and creatures appear on almost every page. Since most of these events occurred at night, the paintings are necessarily dark and create an eerie atmosphere. Some alternative explanations for UFO sightings are proposed in Peter Hepplewhite and Neil Tonge's Alien Encounters (Sterling, 1998). Patricia D. Netzley's Alien Abductions (Greenhaven, 1996) balances more detailed descriptions from abductees with skeptical views. Campbell's contribution will find a home among other nonjudgmental accounts in libraries where readers just can't get enough of these stories.

From

This is a fast-reading overview of eight supposed encounters between humans and aliens. The format is the same for each account. Two pages describing the encounter are followed by two or three more featuring appropriately shadowy paintings of the spacecraft and aliens, along with short descriptions of the distinguishing features of the aliens and the UFO. Accounts range from the rather gentle abduction and physical examination of Barney and Betty Hill to the story of Lucky Sutton and Billy Ray Taylor, who, on the night of August 21, 1955, spent several hours using shotguns to blast visiting aliens. Surprisingly, the notorious Roswell, New Mexico, UFO experience is only briefly mentioned. Such anecdotal evidence will, no doubt, cause most scientists to cringe, but UFO fans will surely enjoy the stories and the pictures. A bibliography and suggested readings are appended. Todd Morning
